Incorporation and governance compliance

Advice concerning incorporation and governance compliance requirements in consultation with the relevant regulator, in particular corporations formed under the Councils (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act (CATSI Act). I have written a thesis in law concerning corporate governance requirements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations related to sharing and protecting traditional knowledge under the framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Nagoya Protocol and relevant human rights treaties. I can provide advice concerning the formation and amendment of Constitutions and Rule Books, and the establishment of governance entities.

International environmental and human rights treaties analysis

Research and analysis of international environmental and human treaty obligations including standard setting, individual complaints, and periodic reporting requirements.

I have extensive experience with international standard setting in the negotiation of multi-lateral instruments. I participated in the negotiation of the Nagoya Protocol during the duration of proceedings from 2008 to 2010 representing an Aboriginal non-governmental organisation through the International Indigenous Forum for Biodiversity. I also participated in the negotiation of the draft Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. I have direct experience of the negotiation process of text for treaties.

Australian environmental and cultural heritage laws

Legal research and analysis of environmental laws in Australia particularly in New South Wales where my practice is based. As a former solicitor of the NSW Environmental Defenders Office (NSW EDO) I have experience in providing advice to a range of environmental law matters for individual and organizational clients. Litigation and advocacy will be referred.

Access and benefit-sharing related to traditional knowledge associated with biological resources

 Research and advice concerning access and benefit-sharing laws and policy in Australia under the framework of the Convention and related instruments for accessing and utilising traditional knowledge associated with biological resources and for benefit-sharing.

 Charitable tax status

 Advice concerning requirements and potential eligibility for charitable tax status for and administrative compliance requirements for small to medium sized organisations and assistance with applications.
